Scientists are using sound waves to study the interior of the sun, which is full of noisy, bubbling, and boiling gases. The study of the sun using sound waves is known as helioseismology [HEEL-ee-o-size-MAHL-oh-gee].
Frequencies coming from the sun’s interior are almost too low for humans to hear by the time they reach the surface. They can’t be heard without the use of a special instrument, the Michelson Doppler Imager, which reads the vibrations. This technology has given people on earth a way to hear sounds from the sun that they have never heard before.
What do you think the sun’s interior sounds like?
