In between shopping for presents and gathering for family meals during the winter holidays, how about a little nature exploration? Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count recruits volunteers with alert eyes and ears to sign up for its annual bird census. If you volunteer, you will spend a day following a route chosen by Audubon, counting every bird you hear or see. The Christmas Bird Count has been a fun family activity for more than 100 years and is the nation’s longest running citizen science bird project.
Are your observation skills keen enough for you to serve as an Audubon census taker? If you can’t participate in the official count, see how many different birdsongs you hear in your own backyard!
